sharing: why/what for must we register a domain? reason ?

can anybody please tell me, why it is needed to register ones own madsonic.org address in order to share a link to our library?
does it mean, its not possible to run madsonic on the users own (sub.)domain.tld and share a link (or playlists or audio-files or a single folder) to customers/associates/friends/whatsoever?
EDIT 2018:
It is possible to add a custon Domain in the settings and it works great.
So everybody can use the fine service at madsonic.org (yourname.madsonic.org) or his own domain (mymusic.example.net)
Also a Port is customizable.
