Filetags for directories

Could anyone further explain some of the differences between tagging a directory as madsonic_multi vs madsonic_artist vs madsonic_dir ?
Is the difference between multi and artist really just sort the displaying sorting order (by name or by year)? Or is it doing some other nifty things when scanning?
And what is the usage for madsonic_dir? Just trying to better understand how to use these features.
